Happy President's Day! Most Brooklynites know that the Patriots under General George Washington lost the Battle of Brooklyn in 1776. What we know today as New York City was occupied by the British for the entire Revolutionary War. After the war Washington - the original "Comeback Kid" - returned to Bensonhurst as president to lunch at Barre's tavern. I don't think he slept here. ;)

Like you, I love going off the beaten path to discover interesting Brooklyn makers. Recently, I went behind the scenes of Tools for Working Wood. I may not be a woodworker, but the tools they make are so well made that I think I may take one of their classes. They sell tools made in other countries too, but their Brooklyn Tool & Craft and Gramercy Tools lines really stand out. Do you think they would make a good stop on Made in Brooklyn Tours?
One of my favorite personalities on the tours is artisanal fashion designer, Roberto Calasanz at De Main in DUMBO. Roberto is dynamic, electrifying and his enthusiasm is outrageously contagious. He makes and makes adjustments to his leather accessories on the spot and... I think I'm going to marry him. ;)
